Fano, or Fanum Fortunae, was an important center during the Roman Empire, marking the endpoint of the Via Flaminia to the Adriatic coast. Traces of its glorious past are still clearly visible in the city.
-Le Mura Romane (The Roman Walls) with the famous Arco d'Augusto (Arch of Augustus), the gateway to the Roman city
-La Rocca Malatestiana (Malatesta Fortress)
-Il Teatro della Fortuna (The Theater of Fortuna), a 14th-century Palazzo del Podestà (Podestà Palace), located in Piazza XX Settembre
-The Biblioteca Federiciana (Federician Library)
-Il Museo Archeologico e Pinacoteca del Palazzo Malatestiano (The Archaeological Museum and Art Gallery of the Malatesta Palace, Art Gallery), which houses the city’s civic collections
-La chiesa di San Francesco (The Church of San Francesco), an open-air monument, offering a very evocative and romantic experience
-The port, El Gugul: a small street, symbolizing the fishermen of Fano
-The Molo dei Trabucchi (the quay for trabucchi, a type of fishing machine), also called bílancion
-La Passeggiata del Lisippo, a walkway along the Marina dei Cesari and the sea, which ends with a replica of the statue of Lisippo
-L'Eremo di Monte Giove (Hermitage of Mount Giove), located just a few kilometers from Fano’s historic center, lies in a peaceful and quiet oasis on the first hills leading toward the inland. It’s an ideal place to relax and recharge, where time still follows the rhythm of the three Camaldolese monks who live there.
In Fano, you can also choose between two beaches: Lido (sandy) and Sassonia (rocky), which come alive in the evening with numerous venues, restaurants, and bars, transforming the area into a summer hotspot.
---Food and Wine.
Among the things to discover in Fano, two stand out as absolute must-tries, available at most local restaurants:
-Brodetto di Pesce – a fish stew you can order by asking for “El Brudet”
-Moretta alla Fanese – a coffee liqueur from the city of Fano. It’s strong and sweet, usually served as a digestif after meals.
---Events in Fano.
-The Carnival: One of the most anticipated events of the year. A document dated 1347, preserved at the State Archive of Fano, confirms the tradition of Carnival celebrations in Fano, which have continued uninterrupted since then. For over a month, Fano is filled with the festive atmosphere typical of Carnival, featuring a parade of allegorical floats with huge moving stages that traverse the city, throwing kilograms of sweets to the crowd.
-Fano Underground: A guided tour to discover the underground Fano, the most hidden, mysterious, and secret part of the city.
-La Fano dei Cesari: A reenactment of the city’s Roman origins, with real Roman camps, walks through the historic center amidst mystical rituals and groups of legionaries in uniform. The evocative parade of the four city districts and the chariot race will determine the champion of Fanum Fortunae. There will also be food stalls.
-Fano Jazz by the Sea: A jazz music festival with a focus on environmental sustainability, which won the Compraverde Buygreen 2020 award in the Green Culture category.
-Brodettofest: Featuring tastings of brudet (fish stews), star cooking shows, wine tastings and pairings, workshops for children focused on the sea, and notable guest appearances.
